Hooters will be looking for lovely girls in Dublin

Hooters, the US restaurant chain, are looking to enter the Irish market with restaurants in Dublin and Belfast. This is part of their plan to open up to 60 restaurants in the UK and Ireland.

I love the slogan on their website “Delightfully tacky, yet unrefined”.

A few quotes from the Hooters website

“The element of female sex appeal is prevalent in the restaurants, and the company believes the Hooters Girl is as socially acceptable as a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, or a Radio City Rockette. The Hooters system employs over 25,000 people - over 15,000 of which are Hooters Girls.”

“Claims that Hooters exploits attractive women are as ridiculous as saying the NFL exploits men who are big and fast. Hooters Girls have the same right to use their natural female sex appeal to earn a living as do super models Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. To Hooters, the women’s rights movement is important because it guarantees women have the right to choose their own careers, be it a Supreme Court Justice or Hooters Girl.”

“Hooters characterizes itself as a neighborhood place, not a typical family restaurant. Sixty-eight percent of customers are male, most between the ages of 25-54. Hooters does not market itself to families, but they do patronize the restaurants.

I patronised a Hooters restaurant while in Texas some years ago and found it to be a really fun and relaxed place to eat. Will it work in Ireland though, that’s the question?

The Equality Authority will jump on their backs for wanting female only wait staff. Ugly birds will complain that it demeans women. Joe Duffy will have a field day. The rosary bead brigade will stage protests.  

I think it’s 50/50 whether they open or not.
